Five Top Tips for Milan Design Week 2017

At the beginning of April every year, the design world turns its attention to Italy’s northern metropolis: Milan. The city plays host to the annual Salone del Mobile (Milan Furniture Fair), the largest trade fair of its kind in the world. Staged at the colossal Fiera Milano fairgrounds, the Salone del Mobile is a serious business, attracting upwards of 300,000 visitors from over 165 different countries.

More than 2,000 exhibitors at this year’s fair will showcase an encyclopaedic array of products across five exhibitions, including the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Workplace3.0 and Euroluce. It is at Euroluce—the International Lighting Exhibition—that you will find LZF Lamps, proudly displaying several new lighting collections among a number of classic models.

As well as the Salone del Mobile, design events take place across Milan, under the umbrella of the Fuorisalone. Key districts include: Brera Design District, Ventura Lambrate and Tortona Design. 1. Check out the old town area of Corso San Gottardo, where you will find the rather smart Haruka Sushi Restaurant. Inside, LZF’s sculptural, handmade Agatha pendants, designed by Luis Eslava, give noshing diners great aesthetic pleasure and fill the space with their ambient glow.

2. Plan your time well. With a raft of events, happenings and gatherings across Milan, there is much to see. Be fastidious and ruthless, and separate the design wheat from the chaff. Must-sees include: SaloneSatellite (at the Fiera Milano fairgrounds), where you will find many of today’s rising young designers; Brera Design District, with a number of top design company showrooms in residence; Ventura Lambrate, with its industrial vibe and hands-on design ethic; and Tortona, with its mix of big design names and emerging talents.

3. Follow the locals and enjoy a late afternoon aperitivo in one of Milan’s many classic bars. If the sun is shining, grab a pavement table, order an Aperol Spritz, put on dark sunglasses and enjoy some people watching.

4. Wear sensible shoes. The Milan Metro is great for zipping across the city, but the best way to ‘do’ design week is on foot. That said, Milan is a world fashion capital, so make sure those sensible shoes are stylish and on point.

5. Ensure you visit LZF at the Fiera Milano fairgrounds in Hall 11, Stand C 20, where an eclectic line-up of handsome, handmade wood veneer lights will thrill your senses.
